Eventide Oyster Co.
Two years ago I traveled to Portland, Maine for the first time and loved eating my way around town. Given the small size of Portland, it's amazing how many stellar restaurants fall within such a small geographic radius. However, I really fell for Eventide Oyster Co. on my last trip, and I have honestly been dreaming about the lobster roll since 2015. This past week my friend Melissa and I spent a long weekend in Burlington, Vermont. When our flight home got cancelled, we decided to spontaneously make a detour, and road trip to Portland, Maine for an extra day and then fly home from there after we hit a few great restaurants. Our car ride was just under four hours, and within 30 minutes of arriving in Portland we were on the waiting list at Eventide.
The restaurant is exactly what one hopes for in a New England oyster bar. The colors are bright, there's a raw bar on ice, and the seafood is the star of the meal. We tore through a dozen oysters from Maine and beyond, and I fell in love with the lobster roll all over again. The brown butter over large meaty chunks on a steamed asian bun is just about perfect. I also enjoyed a side of corn with aioli and bonito flakes.
I always get excited when I have fond memories of a restaurant and upon returning, it is as good as I remembered it to be. Eventide is that and a whole lot more. I would fly back to Maine just to have another meal there-- and don't think I won't do it!
