1789 Restaurant is a classic establishment. Of all of the restaurants in D.C., it has one of the richest histories being that it has been open and thriving since 1960. In 1985 the restaurant was acquired by the Clyde's Restaurant Group, and has been their crown jewel ever since, serving a very discerning and loyal clientele in a gorgeous old home in Georgetown. I went to graduate school at Georgetown University, and until last night had not dined at 1789 since the days of having evening classes in the Car Barn, which puts me back about 6 years. I was long overdue for a visit, and really enjoyed trying out the upcoming special summer menu.
In order to celebrate summer, and to welcome in more guests from throughout the city, 1789 will offer a special that will run from June 2nd through September 12th (excluding Saturdays.) During this time, the restaurant will offer a three-course meal for $45 per person, allowing each individual to choose an appetizer, entree, and dessert from the regular menu. For such an upscale establishment, this is a great opportunity for those who have never had the chance to dine at 1789 to give it a try.
I was thrilled to have the chance to try many of the new dishes on the menu last night. Executive Chef Anthony Lombardo changes the menu almost daily to account for new ingredients that are fresh for the season. We indulged in meats, cheeses, fresh baked bread, a tasting of his homemade pastas, fresh fish, and beautiful desserts by Pastry Chef Ryan Westover. However, the highlight of the evening for me was the morels from Oregon, creamed with Marsala, topped with a duck egg, and served with a Vidaiia lardo biscuit on the side. The morels were earthy and meaty, and paired perfectly with the cream. Breaking the egg and allowing the runny yolk to blend in with the cream was divine, and soaking up the flavors on the plate with the biscuit could not have been a more lovely way to properly lick the plate.
Put the 1789 summer special on your itinerary, and make it a point to indulge in a beautiful and sophisticated dinner for this special price in the coming months. In the meantime, try to get there soon to order the morels before they go out of season!
