Right Proper Brewing Company
Every once in awhile a new restaurant opens, and it just sort of speaks to me. This happened with The Red Hen in 2013. And last week it happened with Right Proper Brewing Company in Shaw. It's not fancy, and it doesn't have gourmet food, but all of the elements came together to make for a really enjoyable experience. The atmosphere is lively, and the interior has beautiful exposed brick and colorful murals on the walls.
The restaurant is quite sizable, and has a very large bar area for people to mingle and enjoy. Right Proper does not take reservations, but my friend and I arrived around 6:15 PM and had no problem grabbing a table within minutes. I immediately knew we had to order the pork rinds with pimento cheese dip. It was a great start to the meal, and we also decided to enjoy a carafe of the Washington Pinot Gris on tap. The menu has some classic American dishes with a slight southern flair. I was thrilled with my order of the pulled BBQ pork sandwich. The flavor was a bit sweet, and served with horseradish sauce on the side as well as a lightly dressed mixed greens salad.
My friend decided to order the southern fried chicken sandwich served with a Boursin cheese spread and pickles. This was a fast food favorite done right, and with a little more class. The chicken was crispy and juicy, and the pickles were pressed into the squishy bun making for a delicious combination in each bite.
My one disappointment of the evening was the baked macaroni and cheese. It looked bubbly and wonderful when it arrived, but I felt the cheeses used were a bit flat causing the flavors to be bland and unexciting. A sharper Cheddar would have really spiced it up.
Overall, the meal was very enjoyable, and the food was great. The menu is full of other familiar comfort dishes like a French Dip, chili, and a grilled cheese with bacon. All of these offerings make me excited to come back for more.
On the beer side of the coin, Right Proper is the only local brew pub in the Shaw neighborhood. The options are plentiful and range from craft beers like their Tropicália which is a spicy and fruity Brazilian inspired beer, to guest beers like local DC Brau, and they even offer growlers for take away. I got a great vibe from Right Proper, and it is just the sort of neighborhood place that continues to make Shaw a destination, and a lively place to live. It's also just around the corner from some of the other new additions to the neighborhood including Eat the Rich, Southern Efficiency, and Mockingbird Hill. I'm looking forward to my next meal at Right Proper, and with their recent announcement about a cheese and sandwich counter that will be open over the weekends, I might become a regular.
